Kitty City, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization recognized by the IRS. Unlike most rescues, our goal is focused on saving taxpayer money by preventing cats from going to shelters. In 2016, we provided over 1,000 spay and neuters, mostly TNR and assistance to the elderly and disabled. While your donations ARE tax deductible, Kitty City Inc. receives no government funding. Every donation goes directly to care of the cats, thereby eliminating unnecessary costs, which in turn saves taxpayer dollars. Our programs are committed to making a difference by leveraging proven programs based on extensive research and partnerships. While the name implies cats only, we provide assistance to cats and dogs, partner with numerous local rescue groups and shelters, as well as cat sanctuaries. We are the only local animal rescue affiliated group that is an active member of the Alliance of Non Profit Excellence. We are a Best Friends No More Homeless Pet Network Partner and a member of Alley Cat Allies, the American Humane Association and the ASPCA. We also partner with local agencies, including Memphis Spay and Neuter Services, the Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County and the Collierville Animal Shelter to name a few.
According to recent statistics, U.S. taxpayers spend over $2.7 BILLION annually or an average cost of over $200 per animal to process, shelter, euthanize and dispose of animals in shelter. Taxpayers also provide for the high cost of facilities, utilities, maintenance and staff.
In addition to the costs to the taxpayer, animals saved from euthanasia by local rescues will then cost the rescue over $250 to make them adoptable. The costs are paid for in donations from the public and as their modest adoption fees do not cover the majority of those costs. Spaying and neutering your pets helps, but our message goes far beyond that…we work to prevent animals from going to shelters, reducing stress to the animal and eliminate unnecessary costs.
In the Memphis area, the numbers are much higher than the national average, growing rapidly and euthanasia rates will continue to sky rocket. The following are statistics gathered from several sources:
Kitty City, Inc. is a nonprofit corporation organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes of reducing animals that are surrendered to shelters in Shelby County and surrounding areas. Therefore reducing taxpayer cost.
